How to make 2009 a better year for your Business

Posted by Marie Christine in February 20th 2009

After 2008 coming to a disastrous end, it’s natural for all of us to worry about 2009, which is predicted to be “not a particularly good year” in a general economic sense. But, if you turn the picture around, it could bring in many opportunities to make good money…you never know when good luck comes!

I might seem boring; as nowadays your financial advisor must be stuffing your head on how to manage the business budget. I think, adjusting personal or family budget can be easy but for business it becomes difficult as all expenditures are tightly budgeted to income projections.

Definitely, your big question must be where to cut the expenses…advertising, customer service or layoff employees. Let me help you with some quick and effective tips…or just say I am trying to be helpful. Let’s see what turns out in the end.

  1. Advertising:

Advertising is one of the first services to be hit by an impending downturn. Many companies feel that this is an easy expense to trim down on when times are bad.

  2. Tax Cash Flow:

Consult an adviser to improve tax cash flow and ease tax payments. Tax payments is one thing you cannot cut down on time. However, there may be ways to ease your tax cash flow position.

  3. Being sweet to customers:

Don’t let your key clients slip off your hand. Suggest ways of adding value to your current deals - either using discounting or providing other benefits. You may have taken some customers for granted during boom times, but now you can keep them happy.

  4. Review business expenses:

Review your business carefully and see which expenses can be cut off. Rather than terminating your employees, it would be better that you take back some of the extra facilities you are providing them.

  5. New Ideas:

During recession be careful about launching new ideas onto the marketplace.

  6. Offer bargains:

Rather than top-end products and services during a downturn. Concentrate on your core business and put off any risky ventures until the economy picks up.

  7. Price Properly:

Due to the economical downturn, don’t make your customers freak out with big raise in your product prices. Be a bit patient and follow with the old price tags or just increase them slightly.

Well, for 2009, I am going to follow these tips. If you have more tricks to survive the recession, don’t hesitate to share it. It will save me and many other business people worried about the crisis lying ahead.

Spouses merging as Business Partners- For Better or Worse?

Posted by Marie Christine in February 10th 2009

Finding a compatible business partner is no easy task because if the two individuals fail to match up, their partnership can ruin the business. A good business partner should be capable of understanding you and your visions, helping you achieve your targeted goals. In short, it’s someone with whom you get along. So, I think, having a spouse as a business partner can be an inviting proposition, but it should be carefully evaluated before taking the decision.

But before you step forward to make the idea workable, let me caution you about the multiple challenges and risks, which can make something suffer inevitably – business, marriage or both. Here are some good tips; both the spouses need to follow before they team up in business.

Tip # 1
Having a successful marriage doesn’t mean that you make successful business partners as well. Many couples try a business together but it’s not important that the idea works for everyone. Don’t make this a decision of your lifetime…you may think you will work well together and don’t, just give up without making it an ego issue.

Tip # 2
It is always better to have targeted aims and objectives so you can plan for the future accordingly. Detailed discussions about the future plans will be helpful for both to work in a specified direction with the exact focus about achievements.

Tip # 3
It’s very rare when both the parties know the financial aspects of a business and it is the department where we can’t take risks. So, it’s better to follow the one who has a good financial approach and follow the saving rules he or she designs for household and business expenses.

Tip # 4
Do matter, how much hard work and time, you two put in to have a successful venture, don’t forget to make time for each other or there might not be a marriage to return to when retirement comes.

Tip # 5
One of the most important tips which help spouses make successful business partners is when they start respecting each others opinions. If the mates don’t agree over small issues, then it becomes difficult to run a satisfying married and business life.

Tip # 6
When spouses are helping each other in a business, they need to over come the superiority complex and the conservative gender ideology. As for a successful marriage we believe that both parties should be having equal rights and business in no different. The situation gets worse when any of the two tries to dominate the other.

Tip # 7
From the very beginning divide the work and home responsibilities. If your spouse is an expert in a specific area, don’t try to do his or her job. It’s important to acknowledge each others capabilities and trust that the other person will complete those tasks.

I would conclude with a thoughtful note that does not allow a bad situation to become worse in a business just because you don’t want your partner to think inferior about you. Always be honest — with yourself and with your partner.

With spouses as business partners, never team up out of weakness or pity, find the right time to team up if you want your business relationship to be successful in the long run.
