Every year famous news magazines and channels rank big names like Jack Welch, Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and many more on the charts of “Most Successful Entrepreneurs of the World” but have you ever noticed who is missing… Women.
An analysis of 30 different studies shows that men and women are equal in terms of overall IQ, but women tend to underestimate their own intelligence and talent while men overestimate theirs. Recent surveys have brought few reasons to light which keep women from being a part of this successful business world.
It is accepted worldwide that women are better at following rules than men; hence, they do better in structured institutions (schools, large companies, institutions) whereas men are more intrinsically rule breakers and therefore on average do less well, but sometimes succeed spectacularly. However, some facts have been studied which obstruct the path for women to entrepreneurship. Let us have a look and find out how true these analyses are;
- According to USA Today story, giving reasons for female shortfall says that starting a business requires a capital, which is more easily accessible with men as they have easier access to the clubby world of bankers, venture capitalists and private-equity.
- Women are more devoted to their family and have less time than men to start a business.
- Females tend to be less optimistic and self-confident than men about starting a business but once involved in entrepreneurial activity, women’s confidence builds, and they are more likely to know other entrepreneurs.
- Women entrepreneurs often give a higher priority to holistic values and harmony in life than to growth and earnings of the enterprise.
- Most of the women entrepreneurs state that they might have accomplished more without a family, as they would have given expansion of their enterprise a higher priority. Generally, family imposes restrictions on how much they work and husbands do not support many of them.
- As an entrepreneur, one has to be completely comfortable with business risk but women as a group are far less willing to risk everything they have for a business idea.
- Women define success much broadly than in dollars and cents. This approach leads to cutting back on working hours to spend more quality time with their family and it ends in making less money.
- Fear of failure is also higher for women in all country groups compared to their male counterparts.
- There is still a distressing lack of respect for the opinions and abilities of women and so men just do not care to hear from women.
Although, one cannot refuse these consequences but at the same time I would like to tell you about many brilliant women I’ve met, who know they’re smart and they use it to their advantage. They do not think for a minute that men are smarter than they are and that is why they are so successful.
I would love to hear your standpoint about what keeps women from joining this successful male club and how can this gap of gender and ego can can be changed.
